HENRI MATISSE ONLINE: Painting with Sticks
HENRI MATISSE ONLINE: Painting with Sticks
"What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter - a soothing, calming influence on the mind, rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue." - Henri Matisse
This is one of two online drawing classes where tutor Frances Stanfield will guide you through Matisse's playful approach to art making. This first session adopts Matisse's use of sticks as a drawing tool (but you don't HAVE to have a stick) and the second we will be "painting (drawing) with Scissors". It isn't necessary to attend both.
Matisse is best known for both his delightfully fluid drawing style and exquisite use of colour, particularly in his simplistic cut out works. In both sessions you will be engaged in mimicking Matisse’s expressive and restlessly experimental way of working to inspire you in your own creative endeavours.
In this class we will be drawing self portraits and still life with drawing tools attached to long sticks (just like Matisse!).
This class is suitable for ALL LEVELS
You will need:
*Something to draw with - ideally a piece or two of charcoal attached to the end of a stick with masking tape. If you don't have charcoal, any pencil but particularly a soft pencil (4B, 6B, 8B etc) or a pen will work best. The size of your stick depends on the size of the room your drawing in - We will be placing paper mainly on a wall and sometimes on the floor, so take the space you have into consideration. If you're short for space or if you cannot get your hands on a stick you can use something like a skewer, ruler or just a pencil instead.
*Something to draw on - Paper - A3 minimum but A2 or A1 would be ideal. You can tape some small peices together to make a bigger surface to draw on.
*A hand held mirror
*A collection of objects to draw from - 3 objects minimum
*Please note* once opened you will have 24 hours to watch so please make sure you’re ready to take the class when you do click!
